In his latest book Crazy Busy, Dr. Edward M. Hollowell, a psychiatrist and expert in Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), talks about a phenomenon he began to notice in the mid 1990s-a dramatic increase in people visiting him exhibiting symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

Attention Deficit Disorder can be characterized by a person’s inability to concentrate or to think for a period of time, primarily because the person cannot focus on a single task at hand. ADD sufferers are easily distracted, cannot filter information well, typically have high anxiety levels, and are often extremely forgetful.

People with ADD typically rush around a lot, feel impatient wherever they are, love speed, get frustrated easily, lose focus in the middle of tasks, and struggle to pay attention to one issue for even more than a few seconds.

Hollowell’s major theme in the book is that the modern world is so “crazybusy” (his coinage) with its increased demands for ever more speed and stimulation that it is causing more and more otherwise normal people to suffer ADD symptoms. By trying to keep up with the pace of modern society, more and more people suffer from distractibility, inability to filter information, forgetfulness, high anxiety, and a host of other symptoms that are characteristics of ADD. People enter what he refers to as the “F state” becoming frenzied, fearful, forgetful, and sometimes furious.

He thinks that these symptoms, once applicable to only a special population, are now found in just about everyone, at one time or another., and that perhaps our entire society is suffering from culturally induced Attention Deficit Disorder, and that being crazybusy has become a national epidemic.

When I thought about what he had to say in his book, I recalled some examples of how people that I observed in everyday life seemed to engage in multitasking to the point of craziness, at least as far as I was concerned. To me it seemed that some people often seemed to lose the ability to focus on a single task and to concentrate on that task to its completion before starting a new task. Whenever I interacted with these crazybusy people, engaged in their multitasking, it was as though I could never act or reply fast enough to communicate with them. They were always doing or saying the next thing while I was still focused on what they had already done or said a split second ago.

I think that these constant multitasking crazybusy people can be found everywhere - never having enough tasks to do at once, busy little bees always needing the adrenaline rush of another task to complete or another conversation to finish.

One morning, as I was sitting on the bus , I happened to glance out the window and saw a young woman driving a large SUV in the next lane. She reminded me of the consummate crazybusy multitasker, striving to cram every available moment of her existence with a never ending series of tasks to be accomplished nonstop.

I couldn’t help but to remain transfixed as I stared out the window. I looked on in amazement as she grasped at a McDonald’s Egg McMuffin with one hand, shouted out commands to someone on her cell phone, occasionally glanced in the mirror to check her eye makeup, and routinely monitored the GPS indicator on her dashboard — all while navigating a 6,000 pound SUV through early morning bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Staring out the window of the bus, I was thankful that I was in the lane next to hers, safely nestled in a larger cocoon of metal and steel than she was. It was then that I began to notice that she was far from being alone in her crazybusy multitasking — she had plenty of company in the surrounding traffic. The guy driving an SUV just in front of her was glancing at his mail, drinking coffee, munching on a doughnut, and yelling at his kids seated in the backseat - all while trying to keep at least a part of his concentration focused on the other vehicles around him.

When I got off the bus, I decided to stop off at a local park. I wanted to enjoy a few minutes of relaxation in the morning sun since I had a few minutes to kill before an appointment. Glancing around, I noticed more rampant examples of crazybusy multitasking here in the park. As I sat down and looked around, I saw a jogger simultaneously talking on his cell phone and fiddling with his Palm Pilot while he ran, trying to keep from becoming entangled in the leash affixed to his wrist, as his poor dog panted, running behind him. I also saw a few people talking to themselves as they walked or jogged, or at least I thought they were talking to themselves, until, as they approached, I was able to make out the ear pods they wore, and hear snippets of their cell phone conversations.

I guess that walking without using a cell phone to multitask has become too boring of an activity for many people, unless they are able to engage in a never ending series of multitasking activities. On my walks, I constantly have to steer clear of these multitasking crazybusy people engaged in all varieties of cell phone chats. As I shift to avoid collisions with them, I hear some barking out orders to subordinates, while I hear others speaking deferentially to supervisors or clients, while still others are engaged in loud arguments with girlfriends or boyfriends, gesticulating and screaming as passerby look on, usually amused. But most of the time I detect partial conversations of banal senseless chatter that seem like a waste of a good cell phone, and nothing more than a terrible annoyance to anyone who happens to be within earshot.

Ten years ago, before the cell phone multitasking mania, these people would have been considered certifiably crazy, or at a minimum, very eccentric to say the least. Talking to themselves, making gestures with their hands in the air, shouting or screaming as they startled passerby and bystanders, one and all, these were not behaviors that normal people engaged in. Oh, but how times have changed!

Today people who display this sort of behavior are just considered more of the crazybody multitasking multitudes.

However, the main annoyance this product shows is that due to the built in microphone, a loudspeaker, a battery and a voice-recognition chip and though the credit card is of a standard size, it is almost three times thicker than a regular one and a lot heavier. This may be a really drawback and designers are working on improving this.

The Technology

The voice card was designed specifically to prohibit fraud of online transactions. The first voice card has no microphone, instead it has a built-in speaker that gives emits an acoustic ID signal which is received by a computers microphone and sent to an online server for processing.

The signal is then verified and after it matches the credit card details, the server establishes that the user is not just entering a credit card number but in fact possesses the actual card. In order to avoid frauds and recording of the beep to replay it later, the ID code changes each time the credit card is used in a pre-ordained sequence that only the server knows.

The new voice version includes the voice password that avoids use if actual credit card theft occurs since it is not easy to reproduce the owners exact voice to make the credit card generate the beep. However, many ask themselves what happens if the owner is ill and has problems breathing or throat pain.

Battery Size

Voice recognition is usually used on cell phones by automatic voice dialing. The holder says the name of the person he or she wishes to call and the name is recognized, associated with a phone number and contacted by the phone that dials the number without further intervention of the cell phone holder.

However, the problem is to develop a voice recognition system with its audio circuitry and a suitable battery of a small seize that can work together for a significant period of time. And this seems to be causing huge problems. The consequence of this is the thick size of the prototype and the weight.

Another annoyance is that in order to maximize battery life, the system starts working only when a button on the side of the card is pressed. Only then the holder can utter the password so the card emits the corresponding beep. This seems too complicated for people to get used to and does not make the card at all attractive.

The idea is to enable the system to allow the holder to make up to 10 transactions each day for at least two years without the battery dying. Voice recognition has also been used for phone transaction before which is in turn a lot simpler because the credit card doesnt have to include the system on it. This new technology is promising, however, it needs to solve the issues explained before and the fact that the costs are yet too high to implement successfully.

I want to share some tips on how you might better take care of your disposal.

First and foremost make sure that dishes and utensils are not in the sink when running the disposal. The disposal needs cold water at all times dishes can block the flow of water as well as foods to the disposal. Utensils will wind up in the disposal. I have seen many a spoon mangled. (Do not stick your hand in to remove the utensil while the disposal is running) It is important to put the food to be disposed of, into the disposal slowly. Cramming the food down the disposal will only cause it to stop working correctly. It is not a good idea to put fat from meat or liquid grease or fat down your garbage disposal either both can cause the disposal to become plugged requiring you or a very expensive plumber to take the plumbing apart and clean out the plug in order to get the disposal running properly.

Putting large bones down the disposal (like those of recently deceased someone) is a very bad idea, but you can put small bones down they will help to clean the inside of your disposal.

Unless you are running a commercial restaurant disposal you should not allow the garbage to build up in the disposal instead run and rinse the disposal every time you put garbage in it, the cheaper disposals will corrode from food sitting in them for extended periods of time.

If you think your disposal sounds odd it probably means there is a foreign object like your car keys, (Bless little Johnnies heart he just did not know what he was doing). Turn off the disposal look under the sink to see how the disposal is plugged in if it is a regular pug then unplug it. Obviously, if you can not see a plug than you should find a way to cover or block access to the switch for your garbage disposal while your hands are in it. Remove all the pieces you can find. Plug the disposal back in turn on the water and turn on the disposal there may a small noise but it should fade as the last pieces of your charm disappear. Sometimes the disposal will completely lock up causing it shut off. Some models come with a switch on the bottom of the disposal the will trip instead of allowing the disposal to burn up. Once again after you have removed any possible obstruction push the switch in and the disposal should reset and be ready to run.

Let me ask you a question…if you are completely 100% honest with yourself, are you truly ready to succeed? The answer to this question can be the difference between success and failure. If you are truly ready to succeed, your success is guaranteed. If you are not ready to succeed, your chances diminish greatly.

How do you know? Well, if you are truly ready to succeed, your goals are set in your mind. You’ve closed your eyes and felt the feeling of success. You don’t bat an eye at someone’s criticism of your goals. You don’t give a moment’s pause to your goals when one business-building technique doesn’t work. You find yourself using every spare second to build your business. You know in the depths of your soul that you WILL succeed, and failure is not an option.

If you aren’t ready to succeed, you have goals in mind, but you aren’t sure that they are truly attainable. If you are honest with yourself, you have some nagging thoughts about whether your business will truly work. Someone’s criticism of your company makes you second-guess your decision to start your business. A family member or friend’s “not interested” response has you looking into whether the business is a scam and if people are truly making money. You are dedicated to working your business…so long as there isn’t a good show on TV, a pretty day outside, a friend coming over to visit, or a new magazine to read. You’ve got excuses ready in the event that you don’t succeed. “The business doesn’t really work” “It takes too long” “My sponsor didn’t call me back” “It’s too expensive” “So-and-so said it was a scheme.” Guess what? If you’ve got these excuses lined up…you’ll probably get the opportunity to use them. A perfect example from my own life experience illustrates my point.

I started smoking my sophomore year in college. I was going to quit when I turned 21, when I graduated from college, when I graduated from law school, and then after I passed the bar exam. All of my “deadlines” came and went. I was still a smoker. One day, I took a step in the right direction. I got some material on how to quit smoking and even purchased some nicotine patches. But when I gave up smoking, I felt like I was depriving myself of something positive. I would forlornly sniff the air as my friend puffed on a cigarette. I would hold an unlit cigarette, wishing I could smoke. I told myself that I wouldn’t smoke, unless work got too stressful…or if I got into a fight with my boyfriend…or if I gained too much weight. I had tons of excuses stockpiled, so it only took the slightest stressful event one month later to have me reaching for my pack of cigarettes.

Two other attempts to quit ended the same way- one of my “excuse” reasons would surface, and I was back to square one. Then, one random Wednesday in April, I decided “enough is enough!” I decided that smoking was no longer an option, and that there were no more excuses. I decided that I had to find a different solution for life’s stresses. Once I decided these things, and felt them in the bottom of my soul, my results started to change. Other people smoking around me no longer was a problem- I was no longer a “smoker.” When I got stressed out, I exercised or took deep breaths. Sure enough, one and a half years later, I am still smoke-free.

I took this life lesson into my business practices. I decided before I ever joined YTB that I would succeed. I decided that I had had enough with counting my days in increments of one tenth of an hour. I decided that I would put my love of people, writing, and business into action, so that every day of my life would be spent doing what I love most. I decided that by 2009, I would no longer be “living for the weekend” because every day would be a weekend and each day I would sleep until I was done. I decided that success was my future, and failure was not an option.

This unwavering “success attitude” was with me through my family and friends doubting the legitimacy of my business. It was there when my close friend called my business an “illegal pyramid scheme” (which was pretty insulting considering I am an attorney). It was with me when I ran around in thirty-degree weather posting flyers on every car in strip mall parking lots and never got a single person to join my business. My never-fail attitude was there when I got rejection after rejection from calling “business opportunity” leads. It was even there when I got nasty e-mails stating that my FREE system to teach YTB reps was a scam, and that I was a generally horrible person. (I’m not lying, I really got these!)

It was also there when I got person after person contacting me to join my business. It was there when I made my Power Team. And you guessed it- it was there when I got my $1,000 Leadership Bonus and it will be there when I make Director.

So, now the question is…are you truly ready to succeed?

The Sacred Harp musical tradition evolved in the American South from a particular way of producing congregational sacred choral music. This form of music uses a special kind of musical notation called shaped notes, which represent each tone within the octave as a distinct shape in order to facilitate sight reading.

The origins of Sacred Harp music are in sacred choral music, such as congregational hymns. Over time, Sacred Harp music has evolved into its own unique musical form that is distinct the originating music. In general the music is characterized by being conducted by a single individual, using relative pitch, emphasizing open fifths, parallel octaves and fifths, and by its polyphony. All of these innovations are outside the norms prescribed by modern academic music theory.

There are two forms of this music that are common, ‘fuguing tunes’ and anthems. The fuguing tune is not the same as the classic fugue, but rather a more simple, though similar, form. Like the traditional fugue, the voices enter one at a time, coming together in the creation of a collective piece. Anthems tend to be longer songs, containing only one verse.

Shape note singing evolved in the early 19th century in many different ways, with Sacred Harp singing being one of them. It was created and intended to make singing by sight reading easier for younger children and new singers without a music theory background. People who couldn’t read traditional music loved the shaped notes and how easy they were to read. The old English form of four shapes within an octave was the approach that that this musical tradition uses. In the North, shape note systems lost out to the more traditional approach of classical academic harmony. However, in the South, shape note singing never disappeared. Harp singing has remained as a popular way for making ancient sacred choral music.

Practitioners of the art not only sing in traditional choral style, but they also participate in an active community of practitioners that is constantly creating new music in the genre. Additionally some might say that each individual practitioner is actively participating in the creation and evolution of this art form, as each performance is unique and collective. Thus this art form is one that is constantly changing.

This is an art form that embraces the spiritual. Those who practice it are able to combine the joy of singing with others who unite to amplify their relationships as well as to create a unique musical expression.

The sacred harp singing technique is only a small portion of the shape note singing that evolved in the early 19th century. It was originally designed as a method to make sight reading and singing easier for novices, including children. People unfamiliar with traditional musical notation were attracted. As a spiritual art form, it is a melding of technique and practice with inspiration and joy. It allows practitioners to come together as a group and gain strength in their relationships with each other and join voices in a united effort, creating a sound unique to this particular musical form of expression.

As we saw in our previous mini-article, children acquire language through a subconscious process during which they are unaware of grammatical rules.

Their interaction with the environment (i.e. primarily parents and people they have constant contact with) added to their innate capacity to acquire language results in a perfect or almost perfect mastery of their native tongue in a relatively short period of time.

In other words, their need to communicate added to their innate capacity plus the exposure they get from their environment drive their language acquisition process.

In short, it is through interaction and meaningful communication that they acquire the language.

What is important to highlight here is that although this is the process we all go through while acquiring our mother tongue, this mechanism is not restricted first language acquisition. And that is great news for us!!!

In a second language setting , that is to say, with people learning a second language and of any age group, by applying the same principles that rule first language acquisition we can make our students “acquire” the language naturally.

What does this mean?

That to gain mastery of a second language it is necessary to have a classroom in which…

a)communication, NOT grammar is the absolute focus of the class AND

b)everything presented must be meaningful to the student.
