Do you need to understand the Spanish language for the holidays that are coming up soon? Are you acquiring new customers at your work, and want to know how to communicate with them in an effective way? Are you taking a course in Spanish at school, and want to learn different ways to remember the words that you learn rapidly and in an effective way?

If so, you will likely want to know more about the best way to learn Spanish quickly. These tips will assist you in retaining the information that you get in class or from your own learning proficiencies, and give you the self-assurance to speak Spanish in a comfortable way in less time than you would think.

Combining Words

One of the first things that you must remember when you are trying to learn Spanish rapidly is that you can learn a number of different words to memorize only one Spanish word. Many words are combined into Spanish, which means that a word can be changed to fit to different tenses and in concert with the various pronouns.

For instance, the verb \”ser\” means \”to be\” in Spanish, and when the verb is coupled to say \”I am\”, \”he/she is\”, or \”we are\”, the verb changes to \”soy\”, \”es \”and\” somos \”, respectively. Once you know the stem words for Spanish verbs, you can learn Spanish quickly since you have the building blocks necessary for the construction of sentences.

You would also be wise to listen to people that speak Spanish as much as possible if you try to learn the language as quick as possible. Take a listen to Spanish radio stations and watch a variety of Spanish newscasts, reality shows as well as talk shows, so you can find out what certain terms mean focusing your attention to context clues, as well as facial expressions or the actions of individuals on the shows.

Prior Experience

You can also employ some of the Spanish words that you already know, in order to put together sentences and understand them, and make sense of the expressions you hear. This will help you learn Spanish quickly, since the language is very fast, and you have to follow the phrasing and inflection to put words or phrases together.

Speaking Spanish with somebody who is a native speaker is also an excellent method of learning the language very quickly. Reading books will give you the basic vocabulary and verb unifications, but to learn Spanish casual types of phrases, figures of speech, and the common language that you will not find in a book, you have to practice with native speakers, so that you can learn to have conversations in the Spanish language, as opposed to simply being able to read and write in the language.

As national debate continues on whether or not Spanish should become our second national language, common sense tells us that it is certainly worthwhile to become at least somewhat fluent in the second most popular language on the continent. First, take a look at these figures:

● The most recent census (2000) projected that the Hispanic population will grow by 25% in the next 20 years.
\r ● Since 2000, more detailed surveys (by Suro and Passel) have found that the Latino population is growing with such tremendous momentum that a 25% growth projection is just the tip of the iceberg.
\r ● Tourism from Spanish-speaking countries has risen more than 35% in the last three years.

What does this mean for the general U.S. population? Take a look at these two examples of how communities are responding to this increased population of Latinos.

1) Communities in South Texas are implementing bilingual education due to the tremendous surge of the Latino population. They have determined that the home, societal and economic benefits of educating Latino children in their native language will do much to improve their local communities.

As a result, entire generations of Latinos are becoming fully educated within the U.S., but they still are primarily speaking Spanish. These individuals are now fully educated, Spanish-speaking members of our societyand it is to the benefit of all if we can communicate together.

2) Ticonderoga High School, nestled in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. The percentage of the freshman class enrolled in a foreign language course has increased from 68 percent to 90 percent in only a year. Why? The region has seen increases both in prison construction and in tourism by French-Canadians from Quebec. As a result of these local phenomena, employment opportunities in tourism and corrections have been rapidly increasing. Employers in corrections indicate that Spanish is required for many entry-level jobs and for promotions. Similarly, tourist industry contacts suggest a need for more French-speaking bilingual employees.

After feeling the pressure from employers throughout the region, Ticonderoga High \r School responded by encouraging students to enroll in foreign language classes. The economic benefit could be underestimated, and students and teachers understood the importance of becoming bilingual for the benefit of the whole region.

These are not isolated circumstances.

Hospitals, construction firms, landscaping companies, tourist shops, hotels, and every other entity in the service industry is on the lookout for bilingual employees-and especially those who can speak Spanish. Basic economics reason that where there is a demand, they will come. And they are coming! The Latino population makes up a huge part of our market. Employers are keenly aware of this. They are hungry for Spanish-speaking workers. Ask any business owner and they will tell you that they give preference in their hiring to those who can speak Spanish. As for the owners themselves? Business is inherently better for those who can cater to the Spanish-speaking population. Therefore, as national debate continues as to whether or not Spanish should be recognized our next domestic language, it is worth the time spent to learn the Latino language.

It can be tedious to learn a language. There will always be a certain amount of rote memorization required. However, there are also many little techniques for more easily learning a language. Labeling things around the house in the language you want to learn comes to mind. Listening to tapes while in the car is another. Then there is a technique I used to learn Spanish.

How I Quickly Learned Spanish

I studied Spanish books for six weeks before going to Ecuador. I didn\’t speak a word of the language during this time - a big mistake. Still, I was able to converse with the locals in the hostel in Quito the day after I arrived. Within a few days I was discussing philosophy, politics and more with Ana, who is now my wife.

How did I learn a language so quickly? I didn\’t really. I had a very limited vocabulary when I arrived in Ecuador, and a very limited vocabulary when I left. However, I could use what little Spanish I knew to express myself. This I credit to a habit that fortunately is also a great technique for learning a language.

I have conversations in my head. I think of what I am about to say, and have always played out future discussions in my imagination. I found myself doing this in Spanish too. The result was that I learned how to speak the language quickly, and say a lot with few words.

Learn To Think In A Language

People imagine that they have to be fluent to think in a language. This just isn\’t true. You can choose to think \”I am walking to the store,\” so there is no reason you can\’t think \”Yo estoy caminando a la tienda,\” as soon as you know those six words. If you don\’t know the word \”caminar\” (to walk), but you know how to say \”Yo voy a la tienda,\” (I go to the store) you can think that. Alternately, you can look up a word or two as you get \”stuck.\”

One reason this is a great way to learn a language is that it helps you remember the words. Repetition works, and saying the words, even if only in your mind, works better than reading or hearing them. When you make a point of translating your thoughts into your new language, you are always practicing.

It is more than just good practice, though. Putting your thoughts into your new language forces you to learn not just words and rules, but also specific ways to express what you want to say. We all talk about different things and have different interests, right? A doctor might want to know how to say \”where does it hurt?\” while I may want to ask where the mountains are. Often, you learn what others think you should know. This helps, but your thoughts are uniquely yours, and when you think in your new language, you are learning exactly what YOU need to learn.

Speaking a language is perhaps the best way to learn it, and thinking it is just speaking it in your mind. You\’ll learn your most important words, expressions and sentences quickly if you are thinking them continually. Another tip: Carry a language dictionary with you to use whenever your thoughts stop flowing. This is a powerful way to learn a language and start speaking it quickly.

What more could you ask for when learning English that includes all four components of the language? Listening, speaking, reading and writing are the four aspects of the English language that you look for in a course, but you probably didn\’t think you could get them for free. Learning English should be something that you can take your time with and not have to work at a pace set by the instructor. With the online courses, you can start off with easy lessons on the rules of English grammar, spend as much time as you wish on each lesson and complete the practice exercises. Best of all, you can do all this from the comfort of your home on your own time.

Start at the beginning of a free course so that even if you do have a basic knowledge of the English language, this will serve as a refresher for you. All of the situations in the dialogues and conversations replicate those or real life, so you won\’t have to deal with contrived situations and words you will probably never use. You listen to a native English speaker read the words you see on the screen and if you are truly beginning learner, you can make use of the online dictionary to translate the words into your own language so that you know what they mean. One thing you should keep uppermost in your mind when learning English is that you should take whatever time you need for each lesson so that you do know it well before you move on to the next.

The lessons start off with simple introductions, both formal and informal. While you learn how to introduce yourself and talk about where you come from and what you like to do, you also learn the rules of English grammar at the same time. In the very first lesson, you will learn how to use the proper verb with subject pronouns. This way you won\’t make mistakes such as saying \”I is\” when you should say \”I am\”.

As you check through the lessons and the resources available on the site, you will see that there are many ways available to help you become a fluent English speaker. A free Audio course in American English is available at no cost to you as well as a wealth of games, such as a Memory game using flash cards for commonly used words and word games such as Hangman. If you need help in preparing for the TOEIC or the TOFEL, you will find resources on the site for that as well.

What about writing an essay for immigration or for an application to college or university? Help is also available for that aspect of learning the language as well. This type of free course will take you from start to finish so that when you complete the course, you know everything there is to know about the rules of spoken and written English.

If you are interested in 100% free learning English with this type of course, try the lessons and resources available at http://www.1-language.com, one of the best free English courses.

1. Keep a Notebook
\r Buy a cheap notebook (I recommend moleskine) and jot down any new vocabulary or phrases that you hear. For each entry, write down the new language, its meaning, and one or two examples of its usage. If you hear a word you know used in a new way, write it down again.

2. Take Up A Japanese Hobby
\r If you take up a Japanese hobby you get three benefits. First, you get to take up an interesting and enjoyable hobby which is fun in itself. Second, you\’ll find a great place to interact with Japanese natives and get plenty of speaking practice. Finally, you\’ll get a source of motivation to study Japanese harder. You can take up anything from flower arranging (ikebana) to sword-fighting (kendo).

3. Make Japanese pen-friends
\r Google \’japanese pen friend\’ and you\’ll find a host of websites dedicated to finding you a Japanese pen friend. Make sure you insist on replies in English and Japanese. This is a great way to expose you to new language, and of course, make connections in Japan. If you can\’t read Kanji, you should try downloading Rikaichan, a plugin for the Firefox web browser (which you should be using anyway!)

4. Review Characters Once A Week
\r If you are just starting out, it\’s very important that you review hiragana/katakana characters at least once per week. Rather than spending one afternoon trying to cram all the characters into your brain, its much easier and more effective to go slowly and review periodically. You should be able to read words you see, and write words you hear. If you are confident with your kana, you should move onto Kanji when you feel ready.

5. Make Japanese Skype Friends
\r Similar to making pen-friends, the difference is you will actually be speaking to them over the internet. Often you can convert pen-friends to skype-friends and vice versa. This is a great way to get speaking practice if you don\’t meet Japanese natives in your day-to-day life, but it\’s never a substitute for the real thing.

6. Listen To The JapanesePod101 Podcast
\r If you open iTunes (comes with all Macs, you\’ll need to download it for Windows), and go to the iTunes Store, you can find a podcast made by JapanesePod101. They regularly broadcast high quality Japanese lessons via their podcast. They can be a little pushy for you to join their paid website, but the podcast is very well produced and is a great way to get listening practice for free.

7. Check Your Grammar With Tae Kims Guide To Japanese
\r Tae Kims guide can be found at this url:

It is a one-stop shop for Japanese grammar explanations. Though I wouldn\’t recommend it as a good way to start studying Japanese, it\’s a great way to review grammar that you might have forgotten. His explanations are brief and filled with examples. He also has a great understanding of contemporary Japanese language usage. Best of all, it\’s free.

8. Correct Yourself
\r We all make mistakes when speaking, the most important thing is that we go back and correct them. If you know you\’ve made a mistake, don\’t be lazy and let it slide. If you make a habit of letting yourself go, you will never improve. Go back to what you said, make the correction, and carry on the conversation from there.

9. Don\’t Second Guess Yourself
\r Don\’t try to make everything you say perfect. Do your best to speak naturally, and then only after you\’ve made a mistake are you allowed to go back and correct it. Unless you\’re giving a speech, never spend more than a couple of seconds trying to figure out what you\’re going to say.

10. Come to Japan!
\r Whether only for a few weeks or the rest of your life, coming to Japan will multiply your Japanese ability. If you are a beginner, you\’ll get 24/7 exposure to the language as its spoken naturally. If you\’re intermediate, then you will have more speaking opportunities than you could ever handle or prepare for (which is a good thing). If you\’re advanced, then you probably already live here :

I have been self-taught student for over 6 months. I\’ve been learning German for over 3 years in school, but unfortunately I haven\’t been able to get much of the knowledge there. Reason? The method was WRONG. Here are the things I learned over a period of 6 months of self-teaching myself the German language.

1. Go and get practical experience.

It is enough about theory. Go and speak with some native Germans! Read German texts! It is 1000% better than sitting in a classroom, practicing with a workbook and translating every word! One man said: \”An ounce of action is worth a ton of theory.\” I have tested this, and I know it is true.

2. Consistency is the key

I learned a lot of German from practicing it 5 days a week, 6 months. I practice 1 hour every day. And I do not plan to stop. Here is a tip how to make it easier: Dedicate when, where and what you are going to study. So you don\’t have to think about the planning, you just sit down and get to work. For example, I practice from 4:30 to 5:30 PM, and I first finish the daily lesson with Pimsleur, and then go with Rocket German.

3. Having the right resources is what separates you from mastering a language in a year from mastering it in 10 years

After this one, top 3 resources for me are: Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone and German with Michel Thomas.

Good luck!

Having said that, it is very important for you to have the right resources. Textbooks and workbooks are not very efficient in my experience. But language learning software programs are. I have one recommendation here if you are interested.

There are some 40 million people in the U.S. who speak Spanish. You might think that it would therefore be easy to learn Spanish and to find someone to practice it with as you learned it.

Maybe. But, be careful. It\’s easy to make big mistakes here. You would be better off downloading a good interactive audio Spanish learning course from the Internet, with its \’learn Spanish audio\’ media, to get the words and accent right.

When I was first learning Spanish I didn\’t know that and had to learn it the hard way! Of course, it was before there was much \’learn Spanish audio\’ available!

While I was working on expanding my knowledge of Spanish, on one extended work trip to Central America, I hired a tutor, a young Spanish-major at the local university. She charged me a lot less per hour than the language schools charged. And, she spoke almost no English, which was ideal for me.

In our first session, we talked for a bit, conversing about a variety of subjects, me with my budding but still very basic Spanish. Then she looked at me quizzically.

\”Don Jorge, usted habla mas \”pachuco\” que Castillano!\” (Mr. Chavez, you speak more street slang than proper, correct Spanish!). I was shocked!

What she was telling me was that I had picked up bad habits and was speaking the \”Spanish\” of the lower-class, uneducated, street people!

I thought about that for a moment, and then suddenly realized why! When I spoke with educated people, they heard my accent and switched to English, to practice their English with ME!

So I had been talking with people who did not speak English. That meant taxi drivers, gardeners, service station attendants, mechanics and street vendors. Anyone to practice with, every chance I got. And I had been learning from them. And I had been getting it WRONG! With the WRONG vocabulary and accent!

It would have been much better if I could have gotten a \’learn Spanish audio\’ with an educated native speaker to mimic, rather than just start talking with anyone.

You see, as I later discovered, there is a great deal of difference between lower-class, uneducated street Spanish and \”Castillano\” (The Spanish of Castille) which is what university-level, correct Spanish is called.

There is much more difference between lower-class uneducated Spanish and upper-class Spanish than there is between lower-class, uneducated English and correct English.

In Spanish the difference between the two types is closer to the difference between the English spoken by a Cockney Taxicab driver in London, or that spoken by an African-American Rap music \”singer/speaker\”, on the one hand, and correct, educated, radio-announcer English on the other!!

Ever try to talk with a cab driver in London? It\’s an education in what you don\’t know about English dialects! And try to write down just what a black rapper is saying sometime! The dialect is so far off the mainstream that it\’s like another language! It\’s the same kind of difference between street Spanish and correct Spanish.

When you are learning Spanish, you want to learn it right the first time. Then you can pick up slang and dialects as add-ons later, if you wish. We all tend to pick up the accents and the manner of speaking of those around us. To learn Spanish that is one of the good things about downloading a learn Spanish audio course.

Almost all of the learning courses use educated, excellent native Spanish speakers as \”say after me\” instructors. The \’learn Spanish audio\’ parts of the courses are excellent. And you own the digital copies, which means that you can copy the lessons to your iPod or other portable audio device and take it with you.

You can refer back to your learn Spanish audio lessons at any time, refresh your recollection of how things are said, and get it right! It will keep you on track to learning educated Spanish and not sounding like some kind of bum or illiterate, uneducated peon.

Traditional French language learning has generally been of the \”listen and repeat\” type, either in class or by way of the old tape systems that I\’m sure some of you remember (I certainly do). Although more recently we\’ve have CDs and DVDs we\’re still presented with the same old methods on them. Now however, at last we have more advanced interactive French language software and in recent years French lessons you can download straight to your PC.

But are they any good or is it just technology for the sake of it?

Like everything else there\’s some and some. If you search for free French language software you\’re going to probably restrict yourself to a few MP3s you can download. No bad thing in itself as it\’s always good to have something to listen too. Every little helps.

You might also find a few mpeg clips that you can view online and why not? If they\’re free, what have you got to loose?

The problem is that sooner rather than later you run out of useful information. Not surprising really, most of these guys are trying to make a living so they\’ll give you a free taster in the hope that you\’ll buy the main French software product. Nothing wrong with that, that\’s good business sense, but sadly for us it means we\’ve got to put our hand in our pocket!

So do we get good value once we\’ve done so? Well for a start there\’s plenty of choice from kids ages upwards. There\’s also a big price range, from around dollars to several hundreds, and from what I\’ve seen so far, you get what you pay for.

At the bottom end you\’re not getting much more than the free stuff. In the mid-range things get more interesting and at the top you have to say you\’re getting pretty comprehensive French language tuition. Most of these are going to come on CD or DVD although there are a few learn French downloads now available that you just pay for and copy straight from the server to your computer. No waiting for the mail and in at least one case a considerable saving over competing products - around $100 instead of $250 or more.

But $100 is not cheap. You can get quite a few books or basic old-fashioned CDs for that money. What makes this course so superior?

Well really we can forget about books straight away. If you\’re an advanced French learner then there are books for verb conjugation and grammar that will prove useful but for the beginner you need to actually hear the language, to hear a French person speaking. You just can\’t get that from a book.

What about audio CDs though, you might ask, you can hear people speaking on them. Well yes, but it really is just the listed-and-repeat style learning that most people soon find quite tedious.

Modern French language software downloads really involve the student. You have the audio tracks that you always have had (and which you can still copy to a CD or MP3 player) but now you also have illustrated interactive lessons and vocabulary and word games. The software is constantly challenging you and responding to your answers. As a result you feel involved and your rate of learning accelerates dramatically.

We can\’t really criticize the old tape systems. Back then, that\’s all there was. To translate them to CDs was really a bit of a cop-out. Fortunately some companies have taken advantage of the technology to provide truly immersive learn French downloads that vastly increase our ability to absorb whilst greatly reducing the time it takes us.
